Remember when you used to feel invincible? You could stay up all night, eat junk food, and still feel like a superhero the next day.
But as we grow older, our body needs a little more TLC to keep it feeling and functioning its absolute best.
And what better way to do that than to start eating healthy? A balanced diet of whole grains, lean proteins, fruits and veggies, and healthy fats gives your body the nutrients it needs to function properly. So grab some kale, chow down on some almonds, and get ready to feel like a superhero again!
1. Whole grains
Whole grains such as rotis and whole wheat naans are an excellent source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Eating whole grains regularly can reduce risk of diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. The fiber in whole grains also acts as a prebiotic which supports digestion by feeding the healthy bacteria in your gut. Switching from refined grains to whole grains is an easy way to improve your diet and overall health and well-being.
2. Leafy greens
Leafy greens such as spinach, kale, and cluster beans (guar) are packed with nutrients like vitamin K, A, and calcium. They’re also loaded with antioxidants that help reduce inflammation and even facilitate good memory and reasoning skills. Adding leafy greens to your meals can be as simple as tossing a handful into a salad or sautéing them with garlic and olive oil.
3. Beans & lentils
The superheroes of the plant-based protein world! They’re not only incredibly versatile and delicious, but are also jam-packed with fiber, making them a great and healthy option for weight management. Crack open a tin and cook up some delicious North Indian meals like dal or Punjabi chana using a blend of masalas, whole and ground spices, onions, and tomatoes.
4. Nuts & seeds
Nuts and seeds are a great source of healthy fats, and can help to reduce inflammation and lower the risk of heart disease. Adding nuts to your diet – whether it’s as a quick snack or a healthy addition to salads, smoothies, or oatmeal – can be a simple and tasty way to boost your overall nutrition.
5. Avocados
Nutritious, versatile, and delicious… avocados have become a kitchen staple in many parts across the world. They are filling, high in fiber, and rich in several important nutrients including vitamins C, E, K, and B6. Toast some bread and top it with sliced or mashed avocado, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and top with sliced tomatoes, feta cheese, and some olive oil.
